The right massage can relax the body and improve health

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Massage therapy can lower blood pressure, help prevent colds, enhance skin tone and more, according to an expert at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

Licensed Massage Therapist Arnold Kelly, who provides massage therapy at the Outpatient Physical Therapy Clinic at the UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center, said massage provides two types of benefits: immediate and cumulative.

"Immediately following massage, you can experience reduced tightness in the muscles, improved blood flow and breathing, plus reduced anxiety and stress," Arnold explained.

"Over the long-term, the benefits of massage accumulate; massage can increase a person's range of motion, strengthen the immune system and provide an improved sense of well-being," Arnold added.

Stress seems to creep into the lives of almost everybody at some point, and Arnold said a massage can do a lot to help.

"Swedish and deep-tissue massages are two of the 'big four' types of massage," Arnold explained. "Swedish is for those who are interested in just relieving stress. If there are deeper aches and pains, deep tissue can help take care of it."

Neuromuscular and trigger point therapy are the other two major types of massage that have proven to be universally beneficial, according to Arnold.

"Clients often inquire about which form of massage therapy is right for them," Arnold said. "What you should look for and ask about are things like: how long the type of massage therapy has been around; how long the massage therapist has practiced it; what it is based on; and whether it focuses more on the physical or mental aspect."

How often massage therapy should be utilized varies from person to person.

"Someone who has little to no physical issues and is simply looking to relax and unwind can benefit from massage as little as once a month," Arnold said. "Someone who has a problem that can benefit from regular massage can be seen as often as once a day. My regular clients average about once a week."

Arnold recommends those considering massage first visit a physician to see if this form of therapy will help then choose a licensed therapist.

Do you have a picky eater? Tips for home and the classroom | ISD ...

By Ms. Angy, ECFE Blog Writer

b?????????? Like many parents, I have a picky eater.? My daughter, since she began to eat solids, had a strong opinion about what she would or would not put into her mouth.? With a quick shake of her head and a clinching mouth, I was not able to get her to try anything.? She wanted her noodles or fruit.? I continued to introduce her to new foods and slowly she began to try them.? Today, she is still a picky eater, but at least we have a wide variety of food options to choose from since she keeps expanding her cuisine repertoire.? This past year, our Discovery Learning preschool program implemented, The Lana Preschool Program (Introduced to us by Sherburne County Public Health).? We began changing our snacks to healthy choices, introducing the children to many different types of fruits and vegetables, and cooking meals with the children that included diverse food options.? I have seen children who would normally not try new food selections, take part in taste tests, and discovering they actually liked the foods they were anxiously sampling.? It was also fun to see the children scarf down the veggie lasagna; not realizing they were eating broccoli, and lots of it!? The LANA program has great tips for families and resources that you can try at home.? Since we have introduced this program at school, I have made changes in our nutrition in my home.? I have been eating more fruits and vegetables while setting a good example for my daughter.? This summer we planted a vegetable garden.? My daughter loved the process and has eaten and enjoyed every vegetable she picked. ?Since learning about LANA, in my classroom and home I have introduced an assortment of healthy foods in new ways, changed snacks to healthy choices, and made trying new foods FUN!

Preventative Health Care on the Space Coast | SpaceCoast Living ...

According to U.S. Preventative Medicine, chronic illnesses ? namely heart disease, cancer, stroke, pulmonary disease and diabetes ? account for about 70 percent of all U.S. deaths and 80 percent of all health care costs for consumers, employers and government payers.

Considering the severity of the issue, today, more than ever, Americans are embracing preventative measures. And Space Coast hospitals, specialty organizations and private practices are no exception, offering education, screenings and technology to help residents maintain their health.

Parrish Medical Center (PMC), for instance, is currently gearing up for its 2013 HealthBridge Education Series, a program designed to bring a wide variety of health information and education to local residents on a monthly basis. Health screenings will be offered at each event, and individuals who complete all of the screenings will earn a one-month membership to Parrish Health & Fitness Center.

The series kicked off in January with ?Healthy Body Month: Everyday Activity for Every Body,? and will be followed by ?Healthy Heart Month: Love Your Heart? presented by leading local cardiologists in February. Subsequent topics to be presented throughout the year include healthy eating, healthy breathing, healthy bones and joints, brain and stroke prevention, diabetes prevention and early detection of various cancers and others.

Health First, meanwhile, operates Brevard County?s only local commercial health plan, Health First Health Plans (HFHP). Members are offered a number of preventative screenings, like blood pressure and cholesterol screenings; exams, including annual physicals and women?s wellness exams; immunizations for conditions like hepatitis and human papillomavirus; and even counseling services.

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commercial health plans and Medicare must cover certain preventative health care measures that can make a positive difference in clinical outcomes. As a result, these services are offered at no cost share to members following established guidelines, as is complimentary fitness center membership at Pro-Health & Fitness Centers.

EARLY CANCER DETECTION ? KEY TO WINNING THE FIGHT
The Space Coast is also home to several comprehensive cancer care organizations?????????????? ? such as Space Coast Cancer Center (SCCC), Cancer Care Centers of Brevard and MIMA Cancer Center ? all of which take part in various cancer screening initiatives and offer state-of-the-art treatments to help patients in the fight against cancer.

No doubt, though, early detection through cancer screenings is key to winning the battle ? especially breast cancer.

Statistically, one in eight women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. While certain risk factors play a role in a woman?s likelihood to develop the disease, the American Cancer Society recommends that all women perform monthly breast self-examinations starting at age 20.

Emran Imami, M.D., medical director at TEPAS Breast Center in Melbourne

?Women at high risk for breast cancer may need to start mammography at age 30 or even younger,? says Emran Imami, M.D., medical director at TEPAS Breast Center in Melbourne. ?Some women with strong family histories should seek genetic counseling and testing for the BRCA breast cancer gene.?

Dr. Imami and his team remain focused on coordinating comprehensive care for women with breast cancer and other ailments, and TEPAS Breast Center is known for providing leading-edge screening technologies.

Specifically, the organization offers digital mammography, which is ?considered state-of-the-art for evaluating clear and detailed images of the breast,? according to Dr. Imami, as well as breast ultrasound, which often assists in interpreting digital mammography images. The center also offers Mammotome? breast biopsy, which Dr. Imami says is ?a gentler breast biopsy using ultrasound to accurately pinpoint suspicious areas. For problematic tissues, TEPAS offers positron emission mammography (PEM), which provides isolated images of the breast, sharply pinpointing abnormal or cancerous tissues.

A PERSONALIZED APPROACH TO PREVENTION
While screening and examining for chronic illnesses are, of course, extremely important with regard to preventative health care, Rebecca Hunton, M.D., founder of Wellspring Medical Center in Melbourne, takes the idea even further with a whole-body preventative, proactive and functional approach to health care.

Rebecca Hunton, M.D., founder of Radiantly Healthy, MD (RHMD) in Melbourne

?Preventative medicine is important for so many reasons,? says Dr. Hunton. ?For one, it?s important for our county?s financial health. For employers, a healthy workforce is more productive and less costly. On the individual/family level, living a radiantly healthy life has benefits in all areas ? mind, body and financial.?

Dr. Hunton and her team specializes in restorative, functional and anti-aging medicine, as well as metabolic endocrinology, which she describes as assisting patients in preventing and reversing chronic disease and achieving optimal health. Patients of Wellspring undergo comprehensive testing and a thorough health history before the team develops a plan of care that encompasses both lifestyle and medical therapeutic interventions.

?Preventing chronic diseases is a revolutionary thought and the typical medical model is not proactive,? says Dr. Hunton, the Space Coast?s only advanced fellow with the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine ?Our clients choose our practice because they do not want to be the victim of a chronic disease that may run in their family. ? Perhaps they have been diagnosed as diabetic of hypertensive and they don?t want to take medications to treat, they would rather reverse the diagnosis.?

That said, Dr. Hunton?s practice focuses on education of patients and alteration of lifestyle choices that can have a big impact on a patient?s life. ?You can feel healthy and vibrant again!? she says. ?Almost anyone can live to be 50. It is the choices you make in your 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s that determine how you will live in your 70s and beyond.?

Chastain films take top 2 spots at box office

(AP) ? Jessica Chastain easily outmuscled Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mark Wahlberg over the weekend, topping the box office with both her supernatural horror film "Mama" and the Oscar-nominated Osama bin Laden hunt thriller "Zero Dark Thirty."

"Mama" opened well above expectations with a box-office topping $28.1 million for Universal Pictures, according to studio estimates Sunday. Chastain also held the second spot with "Zero Dark Thirty," for which she's nominated by the Academy Awards for best actress. In its second week of wide release, "Zero Dark Thirty" took in $17.6 million.

The films' strong performances had the remarkable effect of making Chastain an unlikely box-office queen out of a chameleon-like actress that even fans of "Mama" might have trouble picking out of a lineup. Chastain, whose credits range from Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life" to "The Help" (for which she was also Oscar nominated), even accomplished the rare feat by besting a couple of more traditional box-office stalwarts.

Schwarzenegger's post-governorship comeback got off to a terrible start. His action flick "The Last Stand" opened with just $6.3 million for Lionsgate, one of the worst debuts for the brawny 65-year-old star. The film came in 10th.

Though Schwarzenegger co-starred in "The Expendables 2," which opened with $28.6 million in August, "The Last Stand" is his first proper starring vehicle since exiting the California governor's seat in January 2011.

The Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe-led New York crime film "Broken City" didn't fare much better. The Fox release premiered with $9.1 million.

Instead, audiences flocked to the PG-13-rated "Mama," which bore the imprimatur of the well-respected fantasy-spinner Guillermo Del Toro, a producer.

"Never underestimate the drawing power of a PG-13 horror film," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com.

Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal Pictures, acknowledged the apparently limitless appetite for such a film, if done right: "That's why we did it," she said.

"It's a fun film without a lot of extraordinary violence," said Rocco, who added she would have been "thrilled" with a debut in the mid- to high-teens. "Young people like scary stuff."

With Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Hollywood will get a virtual four-day weekend at the box office. Universal is predicting "Mama" to finish with $33.2 million by the end of Monday.

Though horror films generally are a hit with male audiences, "Mama" appealed strongly to females, who made up 61 percent of its moviegoers. That was key on a weekend filled with male-driven movies, including "Broken City," ''The Last Stand," Warner Bros.' "Gangster Squad" and the Weinstein Co.'s "Django Unchained."

"It's an incredibly competitive marketplace for testosterone-driven films," said Dergarabedian.

The Weinstein Co.'s "Silver Linings Playbook," nominated for eight Academy Awards including best picture, expanded to its largest number of theaters in its 10th week of release. Playing in 2,523 theaters, a jump of 1,713 theaters, the David O. Russell film took in $11.4 million on the weekend ? the same in which its star Jennifer Lawrence hosted "Saturday Night Live" ? for a cumulative of $55.3 million.

Also nominated for best picture, Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," in its fourth week became the director's biggest box-office hit. It surpassed his previous film, "Inglourious Basterds," by adding $8.2 million for a domestic total of $138.4 million.

Soldiers reunite with their families at Fort Lee - NBC12.com ...

FORT LEE, VA (WWBT) -

Dozens of soldiers are home tonight enjoying some down time with loved ones.

Our cameras were there for the emotional homecoming at Fort Lee this evening. The proud men and women are with the Army's 111th Quartermaster Company, a special group that takes care of the military casualties overseas. They're back after spending several months in Afghanistan and Kuwait.

It was hugs and kisses for First Lt. Edward Hurley from his wife Alison and their two kids.

"It feels great, words can't even describe it, feels great," said Hurley.

Nearby, Jillian Wilson is in tears after reuniting with her boyfriend, Sgt. Cody Mills.

"I'm just glad he's home, it's about time," said Jillian Wilson.

"Probably the best feeling I've had ever," said Sgt. Cody Mills.

It's the best feeling ever for Specialist Alfredo Hernandez who says he's now going to take orders from his 2-year-old daughter.

"I'm looking forward to spending time with my family that's the biggest thing, everything else is just obsolete, just spend time with them and do whatever my 2-year-old wants to do," said Hernandez.

The 111th Quartermaster Company is one of the Army's only two active duty mortuary affairs units, which are both based in Fort Lee.

Air India halts flights of Boeing 787 aircraft

NEW DELHI (AP) -- Air India grounded its fleet of six Boeing 787 aircraft Thursday under orders from Indian aviation authorities after the jets were forced to halt flights in Japan and the U.S. because of safety concerns.

Air India spokesman K. Swaminathan said that India's aviation authority directed the state airline to stop flying the Boeing planes Thursday morning as it waits for an investigation by Indian regulators to take place.

"Air India has temporarily ceased operation of its Dreamliners," Swaminathan said.

The action by India comes after Boeing 787s were grounded in Japan and the U.S. after an emergency landing in western Japan highlighted a battery fire risk in the aircraft.

The 787, known as the Dreamliner, is Boeing's newest jet, and the company is counting heavily on its success. Since its launch after delays of more than three years, the plane has been plagued by a series of problems including a battery fire and fuel leaks.

Air India has ordered a total of 27 Dreamliners.

No more foot wraps for Russian troops

They have seen service in the Seven Years war, the Napoleonic wars, the Crimean war and two world wars ? in fact, in every war the Russian army has fought since the 17th century. However, by the end of this year, they will be history.

Portyanki, the squares of cloth (cotton for summer, flannel for winter) in which Russian soldiers have wrapped their feet since the days of Peter the Great, have lost their last battle ? against socks.

When US troops met the Red Army at the river Elbe before the final push on Berlin in April 1945, American GIs were astonished to see their Soviet counterparts wearing rags under their boots.

In fact, the cloths were eminently practical: far cheaper to make than socks, quicker and easier to wash, dry and mend, and (providing they were properly bound) fit for purpose. They allowed Russia?s hard-pressed factories not to be distracted by making socks, and soldiers in the field to improvise replacements if need be.

They did, though, need to be worn correctly. Oleg Dimitriev, a Russia Today journalist who spent two years in portyanki on military service, writes that they could be torture until you got the technique right.

?The most crucial aspect is that one can only wear portyanki that are wrapped tightly,? Dimitriev says. ?If the soldier doesn?t follow the procedure exactly, he could get painful blisters.?

You also had to be able to put your portyanki on fast: Red Army regulations stipulated soldiers had to be fully dressed within 45 seconds.

The rags were changed weekly and then boiled at 100?C.

Partially abandoned in military reforms of 2007, portyanki have now definitively reached the end of the road. Russian Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu has ordered that ?by the end of 2013 ... we need to finally, fully reject this concept in our armed forces.?

Last Australian troops leave East Timor

The last 50 Australian infantry personnel have left Dili. Photo: Jason South

FIFTY of the last Australian infantry troops in East Timor boarded an RAAF C-130 transport aircraft today, ending a six-year intervention that has helped secure stability in the nation.

??I?m looking forward to getting home, seeing the missus and having a beer,?? said Private James Cerone, 20, from Narre Warren in Victoria as he boarded the plane for Adelaide, where his platoon is based.

We have provided a secure environment for them to get on with their future . . . they can stand on their own.?

??It?s been good experience . . . mostly training and I?ll see where it all takes me now,?? he said.

Lieutenant-Colonel Mick Sasse, commander of the departing troops, said he has felt a growing sense that East Timorese want to get on with being an independent nation.

??We have provided a secure environment for them to get on with their future,?? Colonel Sasse said. ??They can stand on their own . . . it?s time,?? he said.

Australian troops were deployed to Dili in 2006 to help quell violent upheaval, forming a joint task force with New Zealand called the International Stabilisation Force (ISF).

But the task force has not been required to respond to violence since rebel attacks on former president Jose Ramos Horta and prime minister Xanana Gusmao in 2007.

Clinton Fernandes, a University of New South Wales senior lecturer and? expert on East Timor, said the troops at first operated in a complex environment where they were confronted by barefoot teenagers armed with petrol cans to burn down houses.

He said the troops minimised interaction with Timorese ??except under highly controlled circumstances, always watching for hidden weapons??.

??That might have been appropriate in Afghanistan and Iraq, but not in a place like East Timor,?? he said. ??But bad habits die hard.??

Charles Scheiner, a founder of the Dili-based non-governmental organisation La?o Hamutuk, said the troops have mainly used East Timor for training for four or five years, keeping a low profile among Timorese.

The withdrawal of the Australians follows the winding-up of a United Nations mission on December 31, leaving East Timor to stand on its own for the first time in almost 500 years.

The country was occupied by Portugal for more than 450 years and Indonesia for 24 years and was then under the shadow of successive UN missions. The deployment has cost Australia hundreds of millions of dollars.

Four Australians died while on the deployment, but none while responding to violence.

Cuban dissidents cleared for travel under new law

HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuba's new, freer travel policy took effect on Monday and for some notable Cuban dissidents it turned out to offer greater freedom than they had expected.

Well-known government opponents Yoani Sanchez and Guillermo Farinas were told they would be granted passports and allowed to come and go after years of being denied that right.

Under laws put into effect to slow migration after the 1959 revolution, Cubans were required to get an exit visa from the government and a letter of invitation from someone in their destination country, but the new policy drops both.

Farinas, who from his home in Santa Clara has staged numerous hunger strikes against government policy, said, to his surprise, he was visited at home by officials who told him he would be able to travel freely.

"I was really skeptical because there was an article in the new law that said those Cubans who threaten the public interest won't be able to leave Cuba. I thought I was in that sphere, but it looks like not," said Farinas, a psychologist.

He said he would get his passport renewed soon and planned to go to Europe to pick up several prizes he had won but been unable to collect. They included the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 2010.

Sanchez, well known internationally for her blog "Generation Y," could not be reached, but posted her good news on Twitter.

She said went to a Havana passport office on Monday, where "the functionary who attended me has assured me that when I have the passport I will be able to travel. I still don't believe it!" she wrote. "When I am on the plane, I'll believe it!"

Sanchez said Cuban authorities had denied her trips on 20 occasions. She said she expected to get a passport in early February.

Fellow dissident Elizardo Sanchez, head of the independent Cuban Commission of Human Rights, said it remained to be seen if Farinas or Sanchez truly will be allowed to travel.

"Until they are on that airplane we can't be sure of anything. It has happened in the past that people have arrived at the airport and the government has said no," Sanchez told Reuters.

LONG LINES

The new policy has prompted long lines at passport offices in recent weeks and did so again on Monday as Cubans queued up to apply for new passports or renew the ones they have.

Some did not realize it, but they will still face obstacles from many countries that will require them to get visas and letters of invitation.

And in a country with an average monthly salary of $19, money will be a problem for many.

Possibly because of that, lines at popular embassies such as Mexico and Canada were normal and the same was true at the U.S. Interests Section, said spokeswoman Lynn Roche.

"It's all by appointment here, so we're not seeing anything different," she said. The United States does not have an embassy in Cuba because the two countries do not have formal diplomatic relations.

In line at the Mexican embassy in Havana's Miramar district, 18-year-old Yaser Hernandez praised Cuban leaders for changing the travel laws.

"It gives us the possibility of knowing other countries, other lands, to be able to know something beyond our own country. It's a privilege for us Cubans, for all of us to have that possibility that our government has given us," he said.

At the Havana airport, Cuban-American Jesus Sanchez, 60, said the travel reform was important for U.S.-Cuba relations, which have been mostly sour since the revolution.

"I believe it's a historic day. The tensions that have been there for many years are thawing out," he said.

The irony of the changes, said John McAuliff, head of the New York-based Fund for Reconciliation and Development is that Cubans are now freer to travel to the United States than Americans are to Cuba.

Most Americans must obtain a license from the U.S. government to go to Cuba, which is 90 miles from Florida.

"Cuba now provides greater freedom of travel to virtually all of its citizens than does the U.S. Our version of the expensive and bureaucratic white card (exit visa) is the expensive and bureaucratic people-to-people license restricted to group travel," he said.

Tasmanian Retail Trade Falters with Closing of Chickenfeed

? January 13, 2013Posted in: Asia Pacific, Slideshow

Tasmania, the island state 150 miles south of Continental Australia, is currently suffering from employment cuts and profit losses. The discount retail chain, Chickenfeed, has already shut down 20 of its 28 stores. Tasmania?s own version of Walmart has already lost approximately $35 million from May 2011 to June 2012, due to disputes over rent between the chain stores and the landlords. The closing down of these retail stores has affected and will continue to increase Tasmania?s unemployment rate.

Debate over Rent between Chickenfeed and Landlords

Hostility between Chickenfeed and its landlords plays a large part in the closing of the retail stores. Due to Chickenfeed?s consistent loss in revenue, storeowners began to fall behind on paying rent. Chickenfeed stores? franchise owners have attributed their failure to the overly expensive rent prices set by the landlord. North Hobart?s Chickenfeed manager explained the reasons why her branch had to close down were because of the high rent price and the competition from the landlords?who also run a business, Shiploads, in competition with Chickenfeed. ?When your competition is also your landlord, that is a challenge,? said Sue Gilbert, communications manager of Chickenfeed, North Hobart.[1] On the other hand, the landlords claim that Chickenfeed of Hobart still owes $50,000 and has a lease until December 31.[2]

Decrease in Jobs, Increase in Unemployment

Unemployment in Tasmania continues to increase from the closing of Chickenfeed stores throughout the island. With a population of just over 500,000, Tasmania suffers significantly from the closing of the 20 Chickenfeed stores. In the next week, over 100 people will lose their jobs from the shutting down of 12 more Chickenfeed chains. With the closing of these 20 stores, the Tasmanian economy will have to spend over $13 million in annual wages and salaries to make up for the loss. Throughout the island of Tasmania, employees have reacted angrily to such short notice being given over the closures. The staff members who have already lost or will lose their jobs will need to hunt for new jobs in the next few months.[3]

Settling Differences or Suffering Consequences

The Tasmanian economy is currently in a downward spiral. While the larger part of Australia has been steadily increasing in retail trade for the past year, Tasmania experienced a -2.6 percent decrease from the previous year. Due to its small size, the Tasmanian economy shifts substantially from any slight changes in its different economic sectors. For this reason, the Tasmanian government should be concerned over the hostile competitors in its economy and help them find common ground. Without government intervention, Tasmania could face greater damage in its current economy. [4]

Texas military assault scandal prompts congressional hearings

HOUSTON - About 4 percent of female service members experience some form of sexual assault each year compared to 1 percent of male service members, according to information gathered for a report discussed Friday by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

In fiscal year 2011, the Armed Services completed 2,353 investigations of reported sexual assaults, a "small fraction" of the total estimated sexual assaults, according to the report, which is still being compiled.

Of those cases investigated, fewer than a quarter, or about 489, were referred to court-martial, according to the report, and for those convicted of sexual assault, 78 percent served time in prison.

As part of their work, the commission also gathered testimony Friday amid a widening sex scandal at a Central Texas Air Force base that has prompted congressional hearings later this month.

Philip D. Cave, a Washington-based military lawyer and retired Navy commander, testified that he's seen military sexual assault cases where commanders have refused to assist the defense because they feared they would be punished.

"You lead to this lack of trust in the system," Cave said.

Nancy Parrish, president of the Burlingame, Calif.-based victim advocacy group Protect Our Defenders, told the panel that between 2010 and 2011, commander-initiated action on sexual assault decreased by 23 percent.

"Victims will tell you there has been command influence, undue command influence when they come forward to report," Parrish said. "They, the victims, are investigated. They are put in psych wards, on psychotropic drugs and investigated other than for the sexual assault."

Parrish called for an audit, noting that sexual assaults are believed to far exceed official reports.

"That's why we're here today, because unpunished sexual assault in the military is an epidemic," she said.

Maj. Gen. Gary Patton, director of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office, testified that military officials are attempting to address the problem, but that the recently reported numbers of sexual assaults were "unacceptable."

"Sexual assault is a crime and has no place in the United States military. It is a violation of everything that we stand for and it is an affront to the values we defend," Patton said, also noting that, "significant underreporting" of sexual assaults "prevents victims from receiving care and prevents us from holding offenders appropriately accountable."

After Friday's briefing, the commission will accept public comments for about a month for the final report, which is expected next fall.

Military sexual assaults sparked public outcry last year after a scandal erupted at the Air Force's training center at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. Parrish and other victims advocates as well as 78 members of Congress demanded hearings on Lackland, as did 15,000 people who signed an online petition. So far, 30 instructors at the base have come under investigation for improper relationships with 56 victims, according to Lackland spokesman Brent Boller.

Later this month, the House Armed Services Committee is expected to hold hearings on the Lackland sexual assaults.

On Friday in Texas, a Lackland military judge concluded preliminary hearings to decide whether Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jaime Rodriguez will be court-martialed on charges of rape, forcible sodomy and pursing illicit relationships with 18 women, Boller said. If convicted, the Houston recruiter assigned to Lackland could face a life sentence.

Ten others are headed to court at Lackland, including Master Sgt. Jamey Crawford, who waived an evidentiary hearing this week, and faces up to 22 years in prison is convicted on charges sodomy, adultery and giving a false official statement, Boller said.

Last week, Staff Sgt. Christopher Jackson, 29, became the sixth basic training instructor convicted of sexual misconduct since April. Jackson received 100 days in jail, 30 days' hard labor and was demoted to airman first class, Boller said, but was allowed to remain in the Air Force.

A dozen more airmen are still under investigation at Lackland, Boller said.

Advocates hope the congressional hearings later this month and the commission report will result in more prosecutions and a reduction of sexual assaults within the ranks.

"The deference and patience Congress has shown the Pentagon in regard to ending this crisis has come at a great cost to service members who are victims of rape, assault and harassment within our military," Parrish said.

Multiple sclerosis study reveals how killer T cells learn to recognize nerve fiber insulators

Jan. 11, 2013 ? Misguided killer T cells may be the missing link in sustained tissue damage in the brains and spines of people with multiple sclerosis, findings from the University of Washington reveal. Cytoxic T cells, also known as CD8+ T cells, are white blood cells that normally are in the body's arsenal to fight disease.

Multiple sclerosis is characterized by inflamed lesions that damage the insulation surrounding nerve fibers and destroy the axons, electrical impulse conductors that look like long, branching projections. Affected nerves fail to transmit signals effectively.

Intriguingly, the UW study, published this week in Nature Immunology, also raises the possibility that misdirected killer T cells might at other times act protectively and not add to lesion formation. Instead they might retaliate against the cells that tried to make them mistake the wrappings around nerve endings as dangerous.

Scientists Qingyong Ji and Luca Castelli performed the research with Joan Goverman, UW professor and chair of immunology. Goverman is noted for her work on the cells involved in autoimmune disorders of the central nervous system and on laboratory models of multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis generally first appears between ages 20 to 40. It is believed to stem from corruption of the body's normal defense against pathogens, so that it now attacks itself. For reasons not yet known, the immune system, which wards off cancer and infection, is provoked to vandalize the myelin sheath around nerve cells. The myelin sheath resembles the coating on an electrical wire. When it frays, nerve impulses are impaired.

Depending on which nerves are harmed, vision problems, an inability to walk, or other debilitating symptoms may arise. Sometimes the lesions heal partially or temporarily, leading to a see-saw of remissions and flare ups. In other cases, nerve damage is unrelenting.

The myelin sheaths on nerve cell projections are fashioned by support cells called oligodendrocytes. Newborn's brains contain just a few sections with myelinated nerve cells. An adult's brains cells are not fully myelinated until age 25 to 30.

For T cells to recognize proteins from a pathogen, a myelin sheath or any source, other cells must break the desired proteins into small pieces, called peptides, and then present the peptides in a specific molecular package to the T cells. Scientists had previously determined which cells present pieces of a myelin protein to a type of T cell involved in the pathology of multiple sclerosis called a CD4+ T cell. Before the current study, no cells had yet been found that present myelin protein to CD8+ T cells.

Scientists strongly suspect that CD8+ T cells, whose job is to kill other cells, play an important role in the myelin-damage of multiple sclerosis. In experimental autoimmune encephalitis, which is an animal model of multiple sclerosis in humans, CD4+T cells have a significant part in the inflammatory response. However, scientists observed that, in acute and chronic multiple sclerosis lesions, CD8+T cells actually outnumber CD4+ T cells and their numbers correlate with the extent of damage to nerve cell projections. Other studies suggest the opposite: that CD8+T cells may tone down the myelin attack.

The differing observations pointed to a conflicting role for CD8 + T cells in exacerbating or ameliorating episodes of multiple sclerosis. Still, how CD8+T cells actually contributed to regulating the autoimmune response in the central nervous system, for better or worse, was poorly understood.

Goverman and her team showed for the first time that naive CD8+ T cells were activated and turned into myelin-recognizing cells by special cells called Tip-dendritic cells. These cells are derived from a type of inflammatory white blood cell that accumulates in the brain and the spinal cord during experimental autoimmune encephalitis originally mediated by CD4+ T cells. The membrane folds and protrusions of mature dendritic cells often look like branched tentacles or cupped petals well-suited to probing the surroundings.

The researchers proposed that the Tip dendritic cells can not only engulf myelin debris or dead oligodendrocytes and then present myelin peptides to CD4 + T cells, they also have the unusual ability to load a myelin peptide onto a specific type of molecule that also presents it to CD8+ T cells. In this way, the Tip dendritic cells can spread the immune response from CD4+ T cells to CD8+ T cells. This presentation enables CD8+ T cells to recognize myelin protein segments from oligodendrocytes, the cells that form the myelin sheath. The phenomenon establishes a second-wave of autoimmune reactivity in which the CD8+ T cells respond to the presence of oligodendrocytes by splitting them open and spilling their contents.

"Our findings are consistent," the researchers said, "with the critical role of dendritic cells in promoting inflammation in autoimmune diseases of the central nervous system." They mentioned that mature dendritic cells might possibly wait in the blood vessels of normal brain tissue to activate T-cells that have infiltrated the blood/brain barrier.

The oligodendrocytes, under the inflammatory situation of experimental autoimmune encephalitis, also present peptides that elicit an immune response from CD8+T cells. Under healthy conditions, oligodendrocytes wouldn't do this.

The researchers proposed that myelin-specific CD8+T cells might play a role in the ongoing destruction of nerve-cell endings in "slow burning" multiple sclerosis lesions. A drop in inflammation accompanied by an increased degeneration of axons (electrical impulse-conducting structures) coincides with multiple sclerosis leaving the relapsing-remitting stage of disease and entering a more progressive state.

Medical scientists are studying the roles of a variety of immune cells in multiple sclerosis in the hopes of discovering pathways that could be therapeutic targets to prevent or control the disease, or to find ways to harness the body's own protective mechanisms. This could lead to highly specific treatments that might avoid the unpleasant or dangerous side effects of generalized immunosuppressants like corticosteroids or methotrexate.

The study was funding by grants AI072737 and AI073748 from the National Institutes of Health.

Kindle Touch updated with new UI, Whipersync for voice and comic book navigation

Still have an old Kindle Touch sitting around? You have some new features to play with. Despite replacing it with a brighter son, Amazon is still updating its original touch sensitive e-reader -- outfitting it with a new UI, enhanced parental controls and Whispersync for Voice, which shares bookmarks between audio and text versions of the same digital tome. Amazon's improved the Kindle Touch shopping experience too, adding recommended content offers to users and remembering where they left off in a sample after they purchase the full text. Finally, the company injected the Kindle Touch with better comic and graphic novel navigation -- allowing readers to view their funnybooks panel by panel, rather than by the full page alone. The update will be delivered wirelessly, though users that fancy their USB cable can install the new features the old fashioned way. Check out Amazon's "what's new with Kindle Touch" page for a run down of the update's features.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1 headed to Verizon shelves this month

Verizon Note 10.1 ces

Amid the slew of televisions, refrigerators, and ovens that Samsung just introduced here at its CES press conference was a small tidbit about the company's flagship tablet: the Galaxy Note 10.1 will arrive on Verizon Wireless shelves this month equipped with LTE connectivity and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. If you recall, we really admired the Note 10.1 for thinking outside of the box and introducing a new way to use your tablet, and we're pretty excited that one of the best Android tablets on the market will now compatible with Verizon's blazing-fast LTE network. Samsung didn't mention pricing or an exact date on which to expect availability.

Android Central @ CES

We'll get our hands on a Verizon-branded Note 10.1 when the show floor opens tomorrow-- until then, you can stay up-to-date on all things CES at our landing page.

Astronauts Could Get Lazier As Mars Mission Progresses

People keep researching Mars missions, being two years in space, like this would be a singular even in human history because of the isolation. The fact is, humans have been doing long duration missions for quite some time. Old Nantucket whalers could be at sea for a year or two. US Navy personel on deployed aircraft carriers and submarines are at sea isolated for six months at a time, sometimes more. Old explorers on Cook's ships, Magellan's ships, were at sea for years. This has been done. We know how to do this. You have a tight captain, brutal discipline, keep people busy, and the mission continues. If there is a problem, it may only be that the crew of a presently manned Mars mission might be too small for that, but maybe we need to rethink what that crew would be?

Similarly, for all the talk of why mars, or why colonize space, no one has ever, even the left trying to be diabolical, or the right being religious nutty, ever mentioned the concept of the right to form religious colonies. Like, the pilgrims came to America to form their own fruitcake colony so they could live exactly as they wanted to under god. This gulf between science and religion, at least in the case of colonizing space, need not be so vast. Let's have a government that invests and encourages investment in space, so that, if people do want to have a tax free haven on the moon, or on mars, they can. If they want to have a pledge allegiance to the flag of mars and they think mars was made 6000 years ago, let them. Or, if people want to have a libertine sex colony on the moon, let them. The whole point of expanding into space isn't about commerce, its about, breaking away from a crowded earth that demands rules so we can all get along, in exchange for the promise of a loosely populated place where you can live, like the way you want to.

Leo talks friendship with Kate, old times and marriage (very briefly)

LEONARDO DiCaprio has become a Hollywood star playing conmen, gangsters, romantic leads and billionaire recluse Howard Hughes.

But his most surprising role of all was giving away Kate Winslet last month at her third wedding.

It came as an even greater surprise to hear that Kate?s actor father Roger, who still lives in her home town of Reading, Berkshire, knew nothing of the marriage of his daughter to Ned RocknRoll.

But by agreeing to such a key part in a secret ceremony, DiCaprio revealed just how close he and Winslet have become since they formed what he describes as an ?unbreakable bond? during the making of the hit film Titanic in 1997.

It has been, he told me in our previous meetings before the wedding, a relationship of laughter and tears all the way. ?She?s one of my closest friends and feels we can say anything to each other,? he says.

?We were both just kids of 21 when we made Titanic all those years ago. But, even then, Kate seemed more mature and worldly than I was.

?I cried on her shoulder many times as we found the demands of filming under the director James Cameron so tough. We have never not been friends since that time. I speak to her all the time. But friends ? not lovers.?

Director Cameron, 58, has since admitted that he pushed his two young leads more than any other actors. Titanic had become a career-long obsession and he didn?t want anything to go wrong.

He even drew Winslet?s nude picture, which featured so markedly in the movie, supposedly sketched by DiCaprio?s character, who sat and watched his co-star sprawl naked on a sofa during the scene.

So what is it that keeps them together, nearly 16 years after the film?s release to become a box office success and, for Winslet, the first of six Oscar nominations?

?A sense of humour,? he says. ?We laugh at the same things. She never lets me take myself seriously, even if I wanted to. We have a special magic.?

DiCaprio, whose latest in a string of relationships with beautiful women ended just two months ago ? this time with 23-year-old model Erin Heatherton ? has often been rumoured to be about to marry like his Titanic co-star.

But he has kept to a bachelor?s life. ?Kate is a great believer in marriage,? he says. ?I admire her for the way she is able to conduct her personal life, which is so hard ? sometimes impossible ? in this business.

?A lot of your life is put on hold when you make movies. Everything, whether personal relationships or friendships, is put on ice when you go on location for five or six months, away from everybody.?

DiCaprio even worked with Winslet?s second husband, Sam Mendes, 47, when he directed them both as husband and wife characters on the 2008 film Revolutionary Road.

Even more bizarrely Mendes, who has since directed the latest Bond film Skyfall, had to watch the couple perform a love scene.

There was obviously a difference of opinion over the scene. ?It may seem strange to do a sex scene with a woman while her husband is directing but it did not seem strange to me,? recalls DiCaprio.

?When the scene was about to start, Kate said, in front of the film crew: ?Wait, wait, this is totally weird.? She turned to both Sam and me and said: ?Are you guys OK with this?? We both looked at each other and said: ?Yeah, we are totally fine.?

She said: ?It is even more weird that you are both OK with this.? But, for me, it was just acting in what was a family atmosphere.?

DiCaprio also points out that he knew Winslet before Mendes even met her. Or, indeed, any of her three husbands. ?We have the ultimate trust and the best of intentions for what we want to do,? he says.

Despite his huge on-screen success DiCaprio, is yet to win an Oscar, unlike Winslet who won best actress for her role as a former Nazi prison guard in The Reader, also released in 2008. She?s the youngest actress ever to accrue six Oscar nominations.leonardo-dicaprio-kate-winslet-children

If there is a shred of envy from DiCaprio he never shows it. ?Kate is like a detective in the way she researches her character. She is committed, professional and probably the most talented actress in the business right now.

?Our own relationship? I would describe it as goofy. We are a little bit older, a little bit wiser but ultimately the same people as we were when we were 21.?

Ironically DiCaprio was set to accept the role of porn star Dirk Diggler (which went to Mark Wahlberg) in the award- winning film Boogie Nights before Titanic.

?It appealed to me more,? he says. ?I like edgy, independent stuff. I had never met Kate but she phoned and said: ?I am going to say yes to this. Will you do so, too? ? So I committed to Titanic instead. Regrets? None.?

DiCaprio, who says of his own marriage prospects, ?I have no plans for anything ? if it happens it happens,? is a loyal and supportive friend for Winslet at a point when her English girl-next-door image has taken a battering.

She has daughter Mia, 12, from her first marriage to assistant director Jim Threapleton and son Joe, nine, with Mendes. She was with her boyfriend Louis Dowler when she met third husband Ned on his uncle Sir Richard Branson?s Necker Island in August 2011.

The wish to keep secret her third wedding from her supportive parents, whom she has regularly praised for their hard work in very modest circumstances, has also struck a discordant note.

But if Winslet?s background was comparatively poor, it appears rich to DiCaprio. His hippy parents, German mother Irmelin and Italian father George, split when he was a baby and he was raised in one of Los Angeles?s toughest districts.

?It was known as Syringe Alley because junkies dumped heroin needles there. But he says: ?I never got the urge to do drugs or rebel because nothing would have shocked my parents.?
