Oprah Winfrey Receives Honorary Academy Award (omg!)

Oprah Winfrey Receives Honorary Academy Award

What's even better than an aha moment? Winning an Academy Award!?

Oprah Winfrey received an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards in L.A. on Saturday The 57-year-old was nominated for an Academy Award in 1986 for her role in The Color Purple, but over the weekend she won the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, granted for efforts that promote hope around the world and goodwill for the film industry.

"I never imagined myself receiving an Oscar, certainly not for doing what I believe is a part of my calling, a part of my being," she said, as excerpted by the Hollywood Reporter.

"It's unimaginable that I would be standing before you, voted by the board of governors. So when I say thank you, the thank you comes from a place deeper even than I know, because it's not just from me, it's from everybody who made me possible," Winfrey gushed.

Robin Williams enjoys 'Happy' moments (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Robin Williams wants everyone to know that he's happy.

When fans stop the actor-comedian to snap a photo with him on their cell phones, Williams says he usually always obliges but often finds people complain that something seems wrong with him ? even though he's smiling.

"I think people always want zany, goofy (expletive) from me," said Williams, who recently returned from a honeymoon to France with new wife, graphic designer Susan Schneider. "It takes a lot of energy to do that. If you do that all the time, you'll burn out."

Williams, who underwent surgery to replace an aortic valve in 2009, is far from retirement, but he acknowledges that he's taking it easier even though he's playing two separate parts in "Happy Feet Two," out Friday.

The funnyman reprises his roles as chivalrous Adelie penguin Ramon and bombastic rockhopper Lovelace in the follow-up to the 2006 Oscar-winning animated film about singing-and-dancing penguins. The 3-D sequel finds Ramon attempting to woo a sultry bird named Carmen (voiced by Sofia Vergara), while Lovelace is hyping a "flying penguin" named Sven (Hank Azaria).

During a recent interview to promote the animated film, Williams discussed ? with the help of some Irish, Australian and robotic accents ? what his life is like at age 60 and why he almost passed out in the sound booth while recording his part in Australia.

___

AP: What kind of pressure, if any, did you feel working on a "Happy Feet" sequel?

Williams: Well, you have to do it better than the first time to make it worthwhile, not just for the sake of the franchise. (Director) George (Miller) kicked it hard. I asked him after he saw it what he thought, and he said, "Well, I don't know, but I think it's better." I said, "I think so, too." He used the technology, performances, everything, and took it to a new level.

AP: You're known for your improvisational skills, which I'm sure was prevalent on this film because the voice actors all recorded their parts together. What was your most memorable improv moment while working on this project?

Williams: There was one moment as Lovelace where I started speaking in tongues. I got so kind of crazy that I almost passed out. George said, "That's great. Keep going!" I told him that if I kept going, I would fall down. I just started doing this Baptist hymnal thing. "Hmmmmhmmmmhmmmm." I think that's actually what led to the gospel song that's in the movie.

AP: It sounds like you had a religious experience right there in the sound booth.

Williams: (In an Australian accent.) "He had an epiphany right there in Australia!" "Epiphany? Isn't that a singer?" "No, that's Tiffany." You do get close to it. There are just these times when you're in the sound booth working together and just really having fun. Being in the same room with people and creating something together is a good thing.

AP: It seems like you can do any accent. Which one gives you the most trouble?

Williams: (In an Irish accent.) I have a difficult time doing an Irish accent, even now it kind of fades slowly into Scottish. You just have to remember it's all sung: "What are you doing? (Expletive) off." You have to be a big fan of U2 and Bono. It's vocal. It's singing. This is actually the best time I've ever done it. Thank God you're recording this now.

AP: As a big technology buff, what gadgets or games are you into at the moment?

Williams: I'm fascinated by the new iPhone. I bought it and kept trying to use it in France. "Siri, what is a good restaurant?" (In a robotic voice.) "I'm sorry, Robin. I can't give locations in France." "Why, Siri?" "I don't know." It's like she was upset with the French or something. "They seem to have an attitude I can't understand. Should I look for Germans, Robin?"

AP: What's life like for you now that all your children are adults?

Williams: It's quiet. I just saw my daughter, Zelda, the other night. My oldest son is married, and my youngest son just went off to college. It's like they've left the earth's gravity, and I'm watching them. "There he gooooes!" I'm just so proud. I don't have a college degree, and my father didn't have a college degree, so when my son, Zachary, graduated from college, I said, "My boy's got learnin'!"

AP: What about your heart surgery? How has that affected how you live your life now?

Williams: I learned to appreciate the idea of just taking it a little bit easier. You just have to be a little more present. It's really wonderful. It makes you appreciate everything ? like breath, and friends and family. Taking it down just a little bit and traveling at the speed of life is a much easier journey.

AP: It seems like you've done everything. What do you want to tackle next?

Williams: After getting married and just coming back from the honeymoon, I have to look at what I want to do in the next year. I want to do a movie, but it has to be the right movie, whether it's independent or a studio movie. I'm much more open to being a supporting actor right now. At the age of 60, I'll be second fiddle. Fine. I'm happy to do it.

Make Nigiri Sushi Quickly in an Ice Cube Tray [Kitchen Hacks]

Make Nigiri Sushi Quickly in an Ice Cube TrayMaking sushi is fun but it can be time consuming, especially if you're have a lot of guests. Bento weblog Lunch in a Box found a great way to make nigiri (hand-formed sushi) using an ice cube tray. Simply grease the ice cube tray with nonstick spray, put your topping on the bottom, spoon cooled sushi rice in each cube, cover the tray with plastic wrap, and chill in your refrigerator for five minutes.

After five minutes in the fridge place the tray face down on a cutting board and the nigiri should slide out easily. Wrap each one with a band of nori (seaweed) if you wish and it's ready to serve.

Preparing sushi rice is easily the most time-consuming part of making sushi, but if you're already making some for rolls now you have a way to crank out nigiri just as quickly as a making a roll with a bamboo mat.

Whitney Duncan, Survivor Star: Dating Keith Tollefson, Secretly Married to Donny Fallgatter?

Whitney Duncan's Survivor bio says the country music singer is 27, lives in Nashville, and is an outgoing, happy, honest. It's the honest part being questioned.

The blonde, who portrays herself as single on the show, has in fact been married since August 1, 2010, to Donny Fallgatter, 32. They wed in Gatlinburg, Tenn.

She was also runner-up for Country Weekly's "Hottest Bachelorette" this year.

Whitney Duncan and Keith Tollefson

The reason this is significant? Because Whitney Duncan has been part of a relationship with Survivor co-star Keith Tollefson (pictured) playing out on TV.

Fallgatter, from Bismark, N.D., is lead singer for the band KingBilly. Their paths crossed in June 2010 and their romance heated up quickly after that.

Whitney Duncan soon moved in with Fallgatter. Before she left to compete on Survivor in May, the couple announced their engagement to family and friends.

"Donny was totally faithful while she was gone," says a close friend. "He even went to help out at her parents' house in West Tennessee a couple times."

As for Whitney's faithfulness ...

At one point before returning home, Duncan phoned Fallgatter, and, as Fallgatter told the friend, "He said she sounded weird, like something was up."

Fallgatter's suspicions were confirmed in a subsequent call, the friend says, when she confessed that she was in a relationship with Keith Tollefson.

"Donny sent me a text that said, 'Whitney got into a Survivor relationship.' I called him and he was upset so I went over to his place," says the friend.

"That's when he told me that she wasn't his fiancé, but his wife, that they had gotten married the summer before. I was totally shocked."

On Aug. 20, Duncan Tweeted, "Moving furniture all day ... sweeet. I'm gonna be happy when I get a home one day and never have to move again."

Since then, she and Tollefson have been spotted around Nashville, and she refers to a BF in her Twitter posts. Tollefson, 26, was voted off Survivor Nov. 2, leaving Duncan to fend for herself. A rep for Duncan had no comment.

Middle-aged and older women with sleep problems are at greater risk

Researchers from Norway have uncovered an association between sleep problems and increased risk of fibromyalgia in women. The risk of fibromyalgia increased with severity of sleep problems, and the association was stronger among middle-aged and older women than among younger women. Results of the prospective study, based on ten years of data, appear in Arthritis & Rheumatism, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR).

Experts estimate that fibromyalgia -- a chronic musculoskeletal pain syndrome -- affects more than 5 million people over the age of 18 in the U.S., with the general adult population prevalence at 3% to 5%. Studies have shown that the syndrome onset typically occurs in middle age and up to 90% of those with fibromyalgia are women. While previous research has found that insomnia, nocturnal awakening, and fatigue are common symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia, it is unknown whether poor sleep habits contribute to the development of this pain syndrome.

Drs. Paul Mork and Tom Nilsen from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) investigated the impact of sleep problems on risk of fibromyalgia in a population of women in Norway. Female participants aged 20 and older who had participated in a large population-based health study (the HUNT study; http://www.ntnu.edu/hunt) by answering a health-related questionnaire and undergoing clinical examination were included in the investigation. The researchers selected 12,350 women who were free of musculoskeletal pain and movement disorders for the current study.

"Our findings indicate a strong association between sleep disturbance and fibromyalgia risk in adult women," said Dr. Mork. "We found a dose-response relation, where women who often reported sleep problems had a greater risk of fibromyalgia than those who never experienced sleep problems."

Results show that at follow-up, 327 women had developed fibromyalgia -- representing an incidence proportion of 2.6% during 10 years. The adjusted relative risk for women who reported having sleep problems "often" or "always" was 5.41 among women over 45 years of age and 2.98 among those between 20 and 44 years. The authors suggest that further studies are needed to investigate whether early detection and treatment of sleep disturbance reduces the risk of fibromyalgia in women.

Mexico's top Cabinet secretary dies in crash (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? The country's top Cabinet secretary, Francisco Blake Mora, a key figure in Mexico's battle with drug cartels, died Friday in a helicopter crash that President Felipe Calderon said was probably an accident.

Calderon said the helicopter was flying in fog when it went down in a remote area southeast of Mexico City, but that all possible causes were under investigation.

"Mexico has lost a great patriot ... and I lost a dear friend," said Calderon, visibly struggling to maintain composure during address to the country. "He was not only an exemplary minister, he was an exemplary Mexican."

Authorities said the undersecretary for human rights, Felipe Zamora, was among the seven others also killed, including the pilot.

Calderon appointed Blake Mora as interior secretary in July 2010. That put him in charge of coordinating domestic policies including security, human rights, migration and the president's relation with the legislature and opposition parties.

His death, while a blow to the government, is not likely to change policy or day-to-day operations.

Blake Mora was traveling to a prosecutors' meeting in the neighboring state of Morelos when the helicopter went down in a mountainous area of Mexico State.

Calderon lost an earlier interior secretary, Juan Camilo Mourino, in the crash of a Learjet in Mexico City on Nov. 4, 2008. Despite widespread speculation that the accident, which killed 16, was caused by sabotage, investigators eventually blamed pilot error.

Suspicions commonly swirl around the deaths of prominent people in Mexico, and Calderon appeared to try to quell any suggestions of sabotage this time, saying Blake Mora's helicopter "was always under guard" in the hangar of Mexico's equivalent of the Secret Service and that it had recently undergone maintenance.

One of Blake Mora's last postings on his Twitter account commemorated the loss of Mourino.

"Today we remember Juan Camilo Mourino three years after his death, a person who was working to build a better Mexico," Blake Mora tweeted on Nov. 4.

Blake Mora, 45, started his political career in the mid-1990s as an official in his native Tijuana and served as a federal congressman through the 2000s, as well as interior secretary of Baja California.

As Calderon's point man in the government's war against organized crime, he frequently traveling to the country's most dangerous places for meetings with besieged state and local security officials.

He was an embodiment of the Mexican government's get-tough attitude, publicly pledging to bring the fight to the traffickers instead of backing down.

"Organized crime, in its desperation, resorts to committing atrocities that we can't and shouldn't tolerate as a government and as a society," he said.

He also oversaw response to disasters, such as flooding and the massive oil pipeline explosion that laid waste to parts of the central city of San Martin Texmelucan last year, killing at least 28 people.

He led the creation of a new national identity card for youths under 18, with modern features including digitalized fingerprints and iris images, to prevent criminals from using false IDs.

Blake Mora's funeral was scheduled for Saturday.

Calderon canceled many of his appearances, including a trip to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting of world leaders in Hawaii next week.

It was hard for many to believe that two interior secretaries could die in air accidents in the same administration.

"This is very unfortunate," said Sinaloa Congressman Manuel Clouthier, whose own father, a popular politician in Calderon's National Action Party, died in a still-unexplained highway accident in 1989. "There are many coincidences because now we have two interior ministers (lost) in one presidential term ... who knows if we'll ever really know what happened."

In the crash that killed Mourino, the jet smashed into rush-hour traffic in a posh Mexico City business district, killing all nine on board and seven on the ground. Mexican investigators blamed the Learjet 45 crash on the turbulence from a larger plane flying ahead.

The investigation found that the pilots were slow to follow the control tower's instructions to reduce speed and appeared to be nearly one nautical mile too close behind a Boeing 767-300 on the same flight path to Mexico City's international airport.

Also killed in the crash was former anti-drug prosecutor Jose Luis Santiago Vasconcelos, who had been the target of at least one previous assassination plot.

The Mexican government provided a detailed account of the crash aimed at quelling widespread rumors that the plane was brought down by powerful and increasingly violent drug cartels.

In 2005, a helicopter crash blamed on poor weather conditions killed Mexico's top police official, public safety secretary Ramon Martin Huerta, who was head of federal police, and seven other people.

NC-17 rated "Shame" shocks AFI audience Wednesday night (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? The darkest, toughest and most explicit awards contender of the year came to the AFI Fest on Wednesday night.

And after getting a look at "Shame" on the huge screen at Grauman's Chinese Theater, guests and festivalgoers were left shaking their heads at the grim mastery of director Steve McQueen's tale of sex addiction.

It also left them wondering about the commercial prospects for a work so unflinching.

"I'll be going to therapy now," laughed "Anvil!" director Sacha Gervasi as he walked through the Chinese lobby after watching Michael Fassbender's character descend into a nightmarish dead end of empty relationships and frantic sex.

"Shame" has gotten most of its attention for its abundant sex scenes and its full-frontal nudity, mostly from Fassbender but also from co-star Carey Mulligan and a variety of others.

The film was rated NC-17 by the Motion Picture Assn. of America, just as distributor Fox Searchlight knew it would be when they picked it up this fall. But the studio is launching a full awards campaign and hoping to give the essentially moribund rating a shot of life -- something that needs to be done, National Assn. of Theater Owners president John Fithian told TheWrap after the AFI screening.

"It would have destroyed this film to cut it down to an R rating," said Fithian. "Too many filmmakers and too many studios do that, and I applaud Steve McQueen and Fox Searchlight for sticking to their guns.

"This is the kind of film that the NC-17 is designed for, and I think we need more bold filmmakers and distributors to make content appropriate for the rating and release it that way."

The trouble, Fithian admitted, is that the rating has a stigma left over from the days when X, which used to be the most restrictive rating, was claimed by the porn industry. "The MPAA and NATO screwed up -- we didn't get the X rating copyrighted, and the pornographers stole it," he said. "That shadow lingers, and so do myths about the NC-17."

The first myth, he said, is that theaters will not play movies with the rating.

"That's just not true," he said. "We've surveyed 100 of our members, and three of them said they would never play NC17s, just as a personal choice. So that myth is 97 percent false.

"And the other myth is that you can't advertise movies that are rated NC-17. That's wrong, too. Fox Searchlight released a Bertolucci picture a while back called 'The Dreamers,' and Steve Gilula says they got it played where they wanted to get it played. In terms of advertising, one newspaper in Utah wouldn't take advertising for NC-17, and that was about it."

Of course, "The Dreamers" was a full nine years ago, and its total U.S. gross was barely more than $2.5 million. Since then, serious adult films have either been edited to get an R rating, or they've been released unrated by companies who are not MPAA signatories.

For "Shame" to turn things around and serve as the leader in the revival of the NC-17, the brilliant but chilly movie will have to generate a very large snowball effect.

"We've had conversations with other companies encouraging them to take this kind of chance," Fithian said. "We've had conversations with filmmakers encouraging them to take this kind of chance. And it takes a serious picture working, hopefully like this picture will, to get others to follow the lead."

Dow sheds 3 percent amid Italy rout

Richard Drew / AP

Trader Michael Zicchinolfi runs across the floor the New York Stock Exchange Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011. Stocks lost about 3 percent on worries about Europe's debt crisis.

By Msnbc.com staff and wire

Worries that the growing European debt crisis would drag down the global economy slammed Wall Street Wednesday, pushing the Dow Jones industrial average down about 3?percent at the close.

The broader market was harder hit. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended down almost 4 percent. The market?s fear gauge, the CBOE Volatility Index, hit a high of 36 during the session. At one point during the session, the Dow was off more than 400 points.

Financial stocks led what was a global rout. Shares of Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citigroup all tumbled on worries about bank exposure to Europe. ?

U.S. stocks had been under selling pressure from the first clang of the opening bell after Italy's borrowing costs soared to 7.502 percent, a level that many feel is unsustainable. Investors pushed Italian rates higher because they wanted more than just Italian Prime Minister Sylvio Berlusconi?s promise he would step down when the Italian parliament passes a package of austerity measures.

Global investors took their money and ran amid rising worries that they wouldn?t be getting their money back. They fear that Italy, Europe's third-largest economy, will not be able to deliver on promises to get its fiscal house in order, no matter who is running the country.

"Italy's latest debt woes signal a new, even more dangerous phase in Europe's debt crisis," Mohamed El-Erian, co-chief investment officer at PIMCO, told Reuters. PIMCO is home to the world's largest bond fund and a holder itself of Italian sovereign debt.

In Greece, power-sharing talks fell apart between the country's two main political parties, raising doubt about whether the country will be able to receive the next installment of emergency loans it needs to avoid default.

Markets fear that a chaotic default by either Greece or Italy would lead to huge losses for European banks. That, in turn, could cause a global lending freeze that might escalate into another credit crisis similar to the one in 2008 after Lehman Brothers fell.

Some analysts fear that the euro itself could fall, which would lead to inflation and a breakdown in free trade agreements in the European Union.

European markets also fell sharply. Italy's benchmark index plunged 3.8 percent. Germany's DAX and France's CAC-40 each lost 2.2 percent.

The prices of assets seen as safe havens rose sharply. The dollar jumped 2 percent vs. the euro. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.97 percent from 2.08 percent late Tuesday, a steep drop.

Officials are trying to calm fears in Italy as bond yields surge above 7%, with CNBC's Ross Westgate. Doug Ramsey, The Leuthold Group, weighs in.

Draft Billy? Draft Kermit? Oscars have job opening (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Maybe the Academy Awards need to launch a "Draft Billy" movement. Or even a "Draft Kermit" campaign.

A return to the Oscar stage by Billy Crystal would be a true Hollywood ending after this week's debacle that started with Brett Ratner's resignation Tuesday as producer of the show over a gay slur, followed by his pal Eddie Murphy's departure Wednesday as host.

The most popular host of the Oscars in recent years, Crystal could be a real white knight if he returned to run the show for the first time since 2004.

"There'd be cheers across Hollywood for Billy's return," said Tom O'Neil, editor of the awards Web site GoldDerby.com. "That could be the happy ending for this story."

Murphy's replacement is the talk of the town, with people in Hollywood speculating whether other past hosts such as Steve Martin or Jon Stewart might return or whether a first-timer such as Tina Fey or Neil Patrick Harris could get the job.

There are even pages on Twitter and Facebook pushing Kermit the Frog and his Muppets pals as Oscar hosts, a truly clever notion that could be just the sort of rainbow connection to bring some fresh magic to Hollywood's big night.

With the Feb. 26 Oscars still more than three months off, organizers have plenty of time to replace Murphy, so there's not likely to be much fallout for the show itself. Just hours after announcing Murphy's exit, organizers signed up Brian Grazer, the Oscar-winning producer of "A Beautiful Mind," to fill the producing slot vacated by Ratner.

Grazer's a class-act choice compared to Ratner, who is best known for directing the "Rush Hour" flicks and drew the scorn of comic-book fans for "X-Men: The Last Stand," widely considered a feeble finale to that superhero franchise trilogy.

It's now up to Grazer and Don Mischer, who is co-producing and directing the Oscar show for the second-straight year, to find a replacement for Murphy.

Ratner departed the show because of the uproar over a pejorative term for gay men he uttered during a question-and-answer session at a screening of his new comedy, "Tower Heist." Coincidentally, Grazer is a producer on the movie.

Murphy, who stars with Ben Stiller in "Tower Heist," was picked by Ratner for the Oscar gig, a choice that puzzled and intrigued awards watchers who wondered if he would be up to the challenge as host of one of the most widely watched TV events of the year.

The once cutting-edge star of "Beverly Hills Cop" has lapsed into bland or outright dreadful family comedies in recent years, and unlike the beloved Crystal, he's not exactly known around town as a people person.

Murphy already had a shaky history with the Oscars, where he was the front runner the one time he earned a nomination, as supporting actor for 2007's "Dreamgirls." He showed bad sportsmanship that night, notoriously leaving the Oscars early after losing to Alan Arkin for "Little Miss Sunshine."

There also were homophobic overtones from Murphy's early career, when crude gay jokes were part of his standup routine.

"I'm afraid of gay people. Petrified. I have nightmares about gay people," Murphy joked in his 1983 comedy special "Delirious."

Finding the right talent willing to take on the often thankless job of playing master of ceremonies at Hollywood's biggest party is arguably the toughest task for Oscar overseers. They want a host who's edgy but not offensive, irreverent yet lovable. Someone who's liked by the stodgy Hollywood establishment but has prospects of bringing hip younger audiences to the broadcast. A star who can mock and embrace in the same breath.

Who knows if Murphy could have pulled that off? But academy overseers have been willing to try new things to renew interest in the Oscars, whose TV ratings have been on a general decline the last couple of decades.

It paid off three years ago, when "X-Men" star Hugh Jackman made good use of his song-and-dance skills as Oscar host. It backfired last season when Anne Hathaway was teamed with leaden co-host James Franco.

If he's interested in returning to host for a ninth time, Crystal seems like an obvious go-to guy, though at 63, he's no longer the sort of fresh face likely to lure younger viewers.

Sasha Stone, editor of AwardsDaily.com, suggested Oscar organizers aim for fresh blood with people such as Oprah Winfrey, Stephen Colbert or even a pairing of "Bridesmaids" co-stars Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, who reunited recently on "Saturday Night Live."

"When I saw them together on `SNL,' I thought they were like Hope and Crosby," Stone said. "They had such great charisma and knew each other so well. I would love to see them on the Oscars. They could definitely have the ability to draw the higher ratings."

No matter who is chosen, though, the host likely will draw the ire of at least some Oscar viewers.

"It's a lose-lose situation for them. No matter what they do, people are going to complain," Stone said. "It's a show everyone loves to watch and everyone loves to hate."

Egypt Bus Crash: Hungarian Tourists Killed In Red Sea Resort Town

CAIRO -- Eleven Hungarian tourists were killed late Sunday when a speeding tour bus overturned at a Red Sea resort town in southeastern Egypt, police and medical officials said.

The crash also injured 27 Hungarian tourists. It took place at the entrance of Hurghada, 315 miles (510 kilometers) southeast of Cairo, according to Egypt's state-run news agency MENA. The agency said the dead and the injured were taken by ambulance to Hurghada hospital.

Four children were among the injured, according to the independent Al-Masry Al-Youm daily paper.

Egyptian security and medical officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information, said the bus was carrying the tourists from their hotel to the airport on a highway. The driver lost control of the bus because of its high speed, the officials said.

The accident happened on the first day of Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, or Feast of the Sacrifice, when many Egyptians and tourists head to Red Sea resorts for vacation.

Road accidents are common in Egypt due to badly maintained roads and poor enforcement of traffic laws. Police estimate road accidents kill about 6,000 people annually in the nation with a population of about 82 million.

Inflation, debt crisis hurt euro zone retail sales (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Retail sales in the 17 countries sharing the euro fell more than expected in September despite some resilience in powerhouse Germany, the EU's statistics office said on Monday, reinforcing concern that the bloc's economy may be heading for a recession.

In the first negative reading since May, sales slipped 0.7 percent in September from the previous month, Eurostat said in an initial estimate. That was much worse than the 0.1 percent decrease forecast in a Reuters poll of economists. Sales in the 27-nation European Union fell 0.3 percent in the same period.

"It was a pretty disappointing figure," said Juergen Michels, an economist at Citigroup. "The 0.7 percent decline in retail sales really suggests there is a huge amount of uncertainty coming through to consumers."

Inflation, volatile financial markets and stress from Europe's sovereign debt crisis are combining to keep potential shoppers at home, particularly as euro zone unemployment rose slightly in September.

Retail trade in the euro zone also fell 1.5 percent on an annual basis in September and by 0.8 percent in the EU as a whole, Eurostat said.

Germany reported a 0.4 percent increase in retail sales in September, compared to August, but there was a decline in France, where sales fell 0.6 percent.

Sales in Spain, the single currency's fourth-largest economy, tumbled 1.7 percent as the country continued to struggle with the highest jobless rate in the euro zone, which is crimping consumer spending.

Sales of food, drinks and tobacco in the euro area in September were flat. Sales of goods other than fuel fell 0.8 percent, Eurostat said, although more detail was not immediately available.

Some economists had expected consumer spending to pick up the slack from slowing exports and support Europe's economies as the region's debt crisis and cooler demand in Asia and the United States curtail a two-year manufacturing rebound.

But Europeans are worried by the worsening economic outlook and are limiting their spending. Budgets are also being squeezed by higher energy prices and tax increases which fueled 3 percent inflation in October.

The European Central Bank cut interest rates by a surprise 25 basis points last week to 1.25 percent to try to boost the euro zone, but some economists still predict a recession.

"Our view that the euro area would slide into recession in the current (fourth) quarter appears to be playing out," investment bank J.P. Morgan said a report, predicting a 1 percent economic contraction in the last three months of the year and a return to growth only in the fourth quarter of 2012.

That could prompt the ECB's new president, Mario Draghi, who has also warned of a possible recession, to cut rates again in December, economists say.

Munoz had his ?Bruce Lee moment? with Silva, now he wants to fight him

Munoz had his ?Bruce Lee moment? with Silva, now he wants to fight him

When Mark Munoz first got into mixed martial arts as a 220-pounder he never imagined he might step into the cage against the world's No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter down at middleweight.

Four years later he's sporting a 6-1 record in the UFC at 185 pounds and now Anderson Silva, a fighter he's worked with often, is squarely in his crosshairs. For the guy who serves as the wrestling guru for many of the Brazilian-based Southern California fighters it's an unusual situation.

After his win over Chris Leben at UFC 138, Munoz told the media that he's tight with the champ and that Silva helped him realize his "Bruce Lee moment."

Silva told him to relax and have fun during his fights. It all became clear for the Filipino-American.

"I got what he was talking about. If you go into the cage with negative emotions, you're going to fight with emotion instead of fighting with your gameplan. Instead of fighting intellectually," said Munoz (4:48 mark).

There's a laundry list of fighters waiting for a shot at the champ that includes Chael Sonnen, Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping. Munoz is right behind them. If he could avoid disaster on the feet, Munoz's takedowns and aggressive ground and pound could give the champ loads of trouble. Why couldn't he execute a similar gameplan to what Chael Sonnen employed at UFC 117 against Silva?

Another important factor is the mental strength derived from training with Silva. You'd have to imagine, since Munoz has rolled with Silva hundreds of times, he wouldn't be intimidated as so many others have been against the Brazilian.

Asteroid 2005 YU55 will buzz the Earth next week

Asteroid 2005 YU55 is as big as an aircraft carrier and the biggest space rock to come this close to Earth in 25 years. Scientists say asteroid 2005 YU55 will fly by Tuesday evening.

A huge asteroid about the size of an aircraft carrier will zoom past our planet next week, flying between the Earth and the orbit of the moon when it flies by on Tuesday (Nov. 8).

The space rock, called asteroid 2005 YU55, poses no threat to the Earth but will be observed by excited astronomers around the world. It's about 1,300 feet (400 meters) wide, round and blacker than coal, NASA scientists said.

At its closest point, asteroid 2005 YU55 will pass Earth at a range of about 201,700 miles (324,600 kilometers on Tuesday at 6:28 p.m. EST (2328 GMT). The average distance between the moon and Earth is about 238,854 miles (384,399 km).

IN PICTURES: Asteroids

"This is particularly exiting since it is the first time since 1976 that an object of this size has passed this closely to the Earth," said Scott Fisher, a program director of the NSF's Division of Astronomical Sciences, in an NSF webchat Thursday (Nov. 3) organized by ScienceNow. "It gives us a great (and rare!) chance to study a near-Earth object like this. In fact, we have several telescopes set up and ready to observe this event already."

Those telescopes include the giant Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico and several NASA Deep Space Network instruments, to name a few.

Astronomers plan to use the telescopes to snap radar images of asteroid 2005 YU55 similar to one taken by the Arecibo observatory in April 2010, when the space rock flew within 1.5 million miles (2.4 million km) of Earth. Tuesday's flyby, however, is much closer and should allow astronomers to snap more detailed images of the asteroid. [Photos: Asteroids in Deep Space]

Observatories in Hawaii will also attempt to take spectroscopic measurements of the asteroid to analyze its composition, researchers said.

Like its name suggests, asteroid 2005 YU55 was discovered in 2005 and orbits the sun in an elliptical path that extends from inside the orbit of Venus out to just outside the orbit of Mars, scientists said. The asteroid completes one trip around the sun every 15 months.

One observatory that will not be watching the asteroid is NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, but only because of the asteroid's speed.

"Thousands of amateur and professional astronomers will observe this object near its closest approach to Earth. However, it is moving too fast on the sky for Hubble to observe it," said Don Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near-Earth Object Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

The asteroid will pose a challenge for amateur astronomers because it will be faint and fast-moving. A small telescope with a mirror no smaller than 6 inches (15 centimeters) is required to try and spot it, NASA officials said.

The asteroid's coordinates for any given time are available at the JPL Solar System Dynamics website, here: http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/.

Yeomans, Fisher and other astronomers have stressed that the public should not be concerned about asteroid 2005 YU55 impacting Earth or causing any kind of gravitational effects on our planet during the flyby. The space rock is much too small to influence life on Earth from its position in space and its chances of actually hitting the planet are nil.

"There is no reason to worry about YU55 getting caught up in the gravity of the Earth," Fisher said. "Through our observations of the object, we know that there is NO chance of it impacting either the Earth or the moon for at least the next 100 years."

If you snap a photo of asteroid 2005 YU55 during its Nov. 8 flyby of Earth and would like to share it with SPACE.com, send the image and your observing comments to SPACE.com managing editor Tariq Malik at tmalik@space.com.

DeMarco: Hot stove full of stars, bargains, big risks

Even if Pujols stays in St. Louis, market will be intriguing

Jose Reyes is just 28 and just won a battling title, so expect him to?get big money in free agency despite a history of injuries.

OPINION

By Tony DeMarco

updated 11:04 p.m. ET Nov. 3, 2011

Tony DeMarco

While Albert Pujols technically is on the market, many factors point to him staying in St. Louis as one of those icon Hall of Famer-with-one-team players.

The latest is a 10-foot bronze statue of him unveiled on Wednesday outside his St. Louis restaurant on Wednesday, when he again called St. Louis, 'the best city to play baseball'.

With the Yankees and Red Sox not in this picture, barring something unexpected, the Cardinals' offer will either be the highest, or close enough to it that Pujols will re-sign.

Still, there are a handful of elite-level talents on the market, as well as some solid pitching options. A look at the best of who's available, some potential bargains and potential regrettable signings.

The top five:

1. Prince Fielder: Even if you include Pujols in the rankings, their age difference ? Pujols 32, Fielder, 27 ? makes the latter the better option. Fielder is hitting the market with his peak years ahead of him; Pujols will enter the decline phase of his career within a couple of seasons.

That said, the Fielder concerns are obvious: He is at best an average defender, and while he made a concerted effort to get in better shape this season, he still is 30-40 pounds overweight. And you wonder how hard he'll continue those efforts once he has $150 million or so guaranteed.

Still, the market will be there ? possibly the Cubs, Giants, Nationals, Dodgers, among others ? and somebody gladly will accept the longer-term risk for some immediate elite-level production. Pujols would be No. 2 on this list if he makes a surprise exit from St. Louis.

2. Yu Darvish: When you include the posting fee it's going to take to get sole negotiating rights to sign the Japanese League right-hander, he's going to be pricier than C.J. Wilson.

If you don't know much about Darvish, he's 25, and went 18-6-1.44 with 276 strikeouts and 36 walks for the Nippon Ham Fighters this season. He's been on scouts' radar since the 2009 World Baseball Classic. He also breaks the mold of Japanese League pitchers in that he's listed at 6-5, and in fact is half-Japanese, half-Iranian.

You have to figure the Yankees and Red Sox will get involved here, as both need starting pitching. The Rangers also are expected to be players, certainly if they don't retain Wilson, and even if they do.

3. Jose Reyes: The only question here is health. He's 28, won the NL batting title at .337, is a .292 career hitter, can steal 30-plus bases, score 100 runs, hit double figures in home runs and play rangy defense. What team wouldn't be helped by all that from their leadoff hitter/shortstop?

NL teams with a need include the Giants, Braves, Cardinals, Phillies if they don't retain Jimmy Rollins, Dodgers and Marlins, so the potential is here for a deal that is too long given Reyes' injury history. But he's going to get paid.

4. Jimmy Rollins: At 32 and with a history of leg issues of his own, he'll clearly be the consolation prize for somebody who doesn't land Reyes. He should remain a high-level shortstop for another two-three seasons. The Giants and going back to his Oakland roots is a logical call, but Atlanta makes sense, too.

5 (tie). C.J. Wilson/Mark Buehrle: Wilson has proven his durability in two seasons as a starter, and doesn't have the wear-and-tear of a typical 30-year-old because of four-plus seasons spent in the bullpen. His bad postseason won't hurt him as much as you might think. But if he doesn't stay in Texas, he needs to be careful here: Going to the wrong place (read: New York, Boston) could severely affect his numbers.

At 32, Buehrle is only two years older than Wilson, although it seems like he's several years older. The durability and consistency here is remarkable: At least 200 innings for 11 consecutive years, and considering he's a control pitcher who never had relied on velocity, there's no reason to think he can't continue rolling along for a handful of successful seasons.

Potential bargains

1. Ryan Madson: Reliever contracts are the salary structure's latest growth area, but of all the veteran closers/setup available this winter ? Francisco Rodriguez, Francisco Cordero, Heath Bell, etc. ? here's your under-the-radar most-effective choice. Madson has proven he can pitch in either role in pressure situations, and has a changeup that makes him effective against lefties and righties.

2. Edwin Jackson: Great stuff, very durable, but not always great results. He's not a $10-million-a-year pitcher, but there's a lot to like, especially if he learns a little more finesse, and especially in the right home ballpark.

3. Aaron Hill: That 36-homer season in 2009 is a thing of the past, and that's probably a good thing, since scouts tell you that it made him too pull-conscious. He finished strongly (.313) in Arizona, who chose not to pick up an $8-million option. But he's 29, is a good defensive second baseman, also can play third, and has pop in his bat.

4. David Ortiz: Depending on what it costs, of course, but Big Papi is done with the five-year, $65-million deal, and showed there's still something left in the tank. The power/on-base percentage combo still makes him a threat.

5. Coco Crisp: Granted, there is an injury risk here, but when this guy plays, he's a force. A move out of Oakland can only help his offensive numbers. He makes sense in Washington, but there are other fits.

Risky business

1. Heath Bell: It shouldn't strike you as curious that Bell's stated first preference is to stay a Padre. He's a flyball pitcher who fits perfectly in Petco Park (what pitcher doesn't, really?), and going anywhere else will limit his effectiveness.

2. Aramis Ramirez: Declining a $16-million player option for 2012 could be a wise move by agent Paul Kinzer, as they'll try to capitalize on a big 2011 season and land a longer-term deal. But beware: Ramirez is 33, his defense already is poor and could result in a shift to first base. And yes, he was great from about June 1 on, but he's a pull hitter who had huge Wrigley Field splits. The wrong new home ballpark could cut those numbers down to size.

3. Jonathan Papelbon: The temptation will be for some team to give him a four-year deal at around his current $12-million-per rate. You can make the case that the numbers still are good, the velocity still is there, and he's only 30. But something says he won't remain worth that kind of money for much longer.

4. Grady Sizemore: Sad to say, but he's never going to be the player he was. There were some flashes in 2011, but a .224 batting average and .285 on-base percentage and continuing health issues made up the Indians' mind. And he was way more valuable to them than any other team.

5. Hiroki Kuroda: He's 36, doesn't really have an out pitch, and has flourished in part due to pitching in Dodger Stadium. Take him out of there, and other than perhaps San Diego or Oakland, you're asking for trouble.

Texas board mulls stem cell therapy used on Perry (AP)

AUSTIN, Texas ? The experimental stem cell procedure that Texas Gov. Rick Perry underwent this summer could be restricted or even blocked under new rules being considered Friday by the state's Medical Board.

Some top scientists are questioning the safety and wisdom of the procedure, and doctors say it may run up against federal rules. It also carries potential health threats, ranging from blood clots to increased cancer risk.

The Republican presidential candidate had stem cells taken from fat in his own body, which were then grown in a lab. They were injected into his back and his bloodstream during an operation in July to fuse part of his spine.

Adult stem cells have long been used to treat leukemia, lymphoma and other cancers. While the cells are being studied to treat other ailments, from heart disease to diabetes, experts say it's too soon to know if the approaches are safe or effective. The Food and Drug Administration hasn't approved using adult stem cells to help people heal from surgery ? but experimentation is common.

Perry opposes greater oversight in Texas, and he sent a letter to the board urging members to recognize the "revolutionary potential" of adult stem cell research and therapies.

"Texas is a leader in innovation in many fields," Perry wrote after his surgery. "It is critical that we continue to foster an environment that encourages technological advancement in the health care arena."

Adult stem cell therapy is different from using embryonic cells, a controversial technology that Perry opposes.

The medical board will meet Friday to discuss rules that would require an accredited body to review any procedures involving stem cells before they're carried out, to access research trials and ensure patient safety. The rules also would require that such therapies be done by physicians and in adherence to Texas and federal laws.

The 19 volunteer board members ? all appointed by Perry, including a dozen physicians ? could approve the proposed rules, make or seek changes, or scrap them altogether, board spokeswoman Leigh Hopper said.

If the board vote goes against him, the matter could become a campaign issue as Perry struggles to reinvigorate his White House bid. His polling numbers have tumbled in recent weeks. Perry has worn a back brace but maintained his work schedule since the surgery.

Some orthopedic surgeons are experimenting with stem cells to help bones heal, with the cells being taken from bone marrow and injected or implanted in the trouble spot. The theory is that such "master cells" will follow cues from cells around them and form bone or cartilage, though researchers worry they also might spur unwanted growth and cancer.

Perry's treatment, which involved using stem cells from fat, was even more experimental.

Perry said in his letter that he understood the need to protect patients, but added, "we need to ensure that physicians in this state can continue to pursue new technologies and treatments that will benefit all Texans."

Oakland protests turn violent, 80 arrests (Reuters)

OAKLAND, California (Reuters) ? Police arrested more than 80 demonstrators early on Thursday in overnight clashes in downtown Oakland that followed a day of mostly peaceful Occupy Wall Street protests against economic inequality.

Officials said eight people -- five civilians and three policemen -- were injured in the violence that left Oakland streets littered with graffiti, smashed glass and debris.

Busloads of police in riot gear advanced on demonstrators after midnight, firing tear gas to disperse hundreds lingering in the streets hours after thousands of protesters forced a temporary shutdown of the busy Port of Oakland.

The clampdown appeared aimed at preventing protesters from expanding their foothold in the streets around a public plaza that has become a hub for demonstrations in Oakland, on the eastern bank of San Francisco Bay.

City officials said police acted in response to a group of agitators who vandalized property, set several fires, assaulted police officers and broke into a downtown building.

"We had the opportunity to isolate the main group of people who seemed to be hiding in the crowd all day," Mayor Jean Quan told a news conference. "The police, I think, very effectively got in and surrounded and arrested them."

Activists from the Occupy Oakland movement -- aligned with anti-Wall Street protests in New York and other U.S. cities against corporate excesses, high unemployment and bank bailouts -- said the vandalism gave police a pretext to intervene. Some blamed "anarchist youths" for the outburst of violence.

"Everything went beautiful until these guys (came) with scarves around their mouths, and then all hell broke loose. Our city just got demolished," said Johnny Allen, 60, a healthcare provider sweeping debris in front of City Hall.

City crews pressure-washed graffiti such as "kill cops" and "smash" sprayed on downtown building walls.

TEAR GAS

The latest unrest in Oakland, which shot to the forefront of nationwide anti-Wall Street protests after a former Marine was badly injured in clashes last week, followed a day of rallies that drew 7,000 activists at their peak.

Lined up shoulder to shoulder, police fired volleys of tear gas, forcing the demonstrators to retreat into Frank Ogawa Plaza, a public square next to City Hall that protesters have used as a camp since last month.

Some protesters hurled tear gas canisters and rocks back at police as they fled.

The Port of Oakland was shut down for several hours on Wednesday after crowds marched on the sprawling facility. But demonstrators protesting a financial system they believe benefits mainly corporations and the wealthy failed in their efforts to cause widespread disruption to commerce.

Calm was restored by late morning and the port -- the nation's fourth busiest maritime container-cargo hub with $39 billion in yearly imports and exports -- was back in full swing on Thursday.

Some disagreements flared overnight between a minority of protesters who set up trash-can barricades and wore face masks and other, often older, demonstrators who lectured about the need to keep protests peaceful and not provoke police.

A sign on a coffee shop with a shattered window offered an apology: "We're sorry. This does not represent us."

75 years of testing products for your safety?

Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports has tested about 155,000 products, including this portable hair dryer in 1961.

By Herb Weisbaum, The ConsumerMan

?

Consumers Union, the world's largest independent product-testing organization and publisher of Consumer Reports, just celebrated its 75th anniversary.?

Over the years, Consumers Union testers have used and abused about 155,000 products: car seats, cell phones, computers, eyeglasses, refrigerators, sneakers, space heaters, toasters and washing machines, plus cars, trucks and SUVs, just to name a few.

When they first tested vacuum cleaners back in 1936, a couple of models were found to have ?a slight electrical shock hazard.? Today, you don?t have to worry about getting zapped by your vacuum. But the magazine?s latest tests show the performance you get still varies greatly from model to model.?

Instant glue was tested in 1973 by Consumer Reports.

I was in New York last week, for the big 75th anniversary celebration and had the chance to speak to Jim Guest, the president of Consumer Reports.?

?I love what I do,? Guest told me. ?Consumer Reports is an American icon. We?re probably the most trusted institution in America. We?re absolutely independent. People know we?re telling the truth and helping millions and millions of people.??

Guest says today?s products are safer and more reliable than they were 75 years ago. There are also better regulations in place to protect you. But he says advertising, in many cases, ?is just as misleading today as it was back then.?

Do-it-yourself perm kits were tested by Consumer Reports in 1938.

Here is a bit more of our conversation:

You?ve never accepted advertising, which means you can call it as you see it. But why do you fight so hard to keep companies from using your ratings in their ads? If you find a product to be top-rated, why don?t you want a company to say that?

To really understand what we?ve got, you have to see the whole article. Picking just a little quote here or a little fact there, that?s not really serving consumers well. And you?re right. We never take any corporate contributions or corporate money or any kind. We don?t take free samples. We have anonymous shoppers around the country who buy the products we test, so no one can rig-up the products. We maintain strict independence. Our only interest is consumers.??

When automatic coffee makers started becoming a popular household appliances in the late 1950s, Consumer Reports was there.

Consumer advocates had some great victories when the Democrats controlled Congress. But now, Republican lawmakers are trying to roll back the clock. You and other consumer groups are spending a lot of time and money to stop that, which takes away from efforts to get new protections in place.

We?re working real hard. We fought for protections against financial scams. We fought for safe drugs, and safe toys. And they?re at risk. The forces on the other side are trying to capitalize on the consumer and we?re trying to protect the consumer.??

You see the federal government as the answer to some of these problems, as a way to protect the consumer. But the current sentiment in this country right now among many people is that government is bad and we?ve got to get it off our backs.

Consumer Reports

In 1951, Consumer Reports tested the safety of irons.

We believe in a free market. We think consumers ought to be able to make independent choices. But they?ve got to be informed. Who can understand a credit card contract that?s 40 or 50 pages long? We just want to make sure that things are transparent, that people can understand what?s being offered and that they understand the risks. (We want) regulations requiring transparency and requiring that the truth be told?? what?s wrong with that? ??

Your tests often uncover products that are dangerous or simply don?t perform as promised. Do companies make changes; are things fixed because you find these defects?

That?s one of the tremendously rewarding things about working at Consumer Reports. We?ll rate a product that doesn?t measure up, and then we open up our records. If the manufacturer says ?why did you rate us poorly,? we?ll show them the test we used. We?ll show them the data on their product. And fairly often, when we come back to rate that product again a year or two later, they?ve made improvements and corrected the deficiencies. That?s incredibly satisfying.??
